EARTH QUAKE IN PERU... DOZENS KILLED...

A powerful 7.9 earthquake has hit the coast of Peru, killing more than 70 people and injuring 680 others.

At least 46 people were killed in the province of Ica, about 265km (165 miles) south of Lima, officials said.

In Lima, buildings shook violently during the prolonged tremors, prompting residents to take to the streets.

President Alan Garcia said Peru had been badly hit, but first signs were that the quake was not a catastrophe.

He said he was sending three cabinet members, including the health minister, to the worst affected southern coastal towns.

Low-lying coastal areas in Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia were evacuated after a tsunami alert was issued. The warning was later withdrawn.

The earthquake struck coastal Peru at 1840 (2340 GMT) and lasted for

several minutes,

The US Geological Survey said its epicentre was beneath the Pacific Ocean, about 145km (90 miles) south-east of Lima.

Four strong aftershocks ranging from 5.4 to 5.9 followed, the organisatio

n said.

Rush-hour traffic in Lima came to a halt as buildings shook with the force of the powerful tremors and hundreds of people spilled onto the streets.

"I heard quite violent shaking, books falling off the bookcase, a lampshade falling over and pictures falling off the wall, and I went to the safe zone by the lift," the BBC's Dan Collyns in Lima said.

But the full devastating force of the earthquake was felt closer to the epicentre in the southern coastal province of Ica.

Deputy Health Minister Jose Calderon described the situation in Ica, where 650,000 people live, as "dramatic".

The city's mayor, Mariano Nacimiento, said hospitals in the area had reported 4

6 deaths and 350 injured, but added that the death toll was expected to rise.

The mayor said he had asked the government for medicine, blankets, tents and all help that could be given.

"We're working, visiting areas where there are dead people and for this, the government's role is very important," he told Radio Programas del Peru (RPP).

Local TV reports said many of the dead and injured in Ica had been celebrating evening mass when the church they were in collapsed.

State of emergency

Speaking on national TV and radio, President Garcia thanked God that the earthquake had not caused a catastrophe, as such events had in the past.

"It fortunately did not cause a catastrophe with an immense number of victims," he said.

"We have declared a state of emergency in the Ica province and we are going this evening to ensure that regional and local governments, civil defence institutions and ministries can spend what they need to, rapidly and immediately, in order to solve the problems that exist there."

The president also ordered police onto the streets of Lima to keep order.

Our correspondent says the feeling on the streets of Lima, a city where one third of the population lives, is that it may have narrowly avoided a major disaster.

FLOOD IN NORTH KOREA...

We went to Sogon, driving for about two hours to get there, and we saw extensive examples of flooding as we went down, with widespread inundation of arable lands which, of course, creates concerns as regards the long-term food implications.

We have been told by the government that the Kangwon province is one of the areas that is worst affected. The impression we are getting is that there is severe damage throughout the southern half of the country, across to the east.

The southern part of the country is the main food-producing area. As you go further north it is more mountainous and hence their ability to produce is limited.

The area that has been inundated is part of the 'rice bowl', hence this creates additional concerns as to what impact that may have.

We estimate that annually there is a food deficit of about a million tons of cereals - that's maize and rice. So, in the past, North Korea has relied on bilateral, from China and South Korea predominantly, and also multilateral support through the World Food Programme.

Collapsed houses

Last year, the amount of food that entered the county did not meet the food gap and hence we were concerned about the implications that was going to have for food security in the country and potentially the impact that may have on the most vulnerable.

Certainly for them to have the floods this year is only going to exacerbate the already food insecure situation in the country.

People are managing as best they can. We understand from the government that those who have lost their homes are now residing in either their place of work or some form of community shelter - either a school or nursery, we expect.

We were dealing with local officials. They tell us that the waters have inundated houses, houses have collapsed, factories have been completely inundated and roads and bridges have been washed away. Certainly the impression we are getting is that this is very severe flooding.

We saw bridges that were knocked down, we saw roads that had been washed away. The infrastructure is typically old and anything that damages it further is going to have implications.

Wiped out

The landscape in the southern area is a combination of flatlands with quite dramatic mountains, there are fields with hills and mountains shooting up.

There are small villages and co-operative farms. These are very rudimentary houses - typically handmade.

People may have a small plot in the front of the house in which they try to grow their own vegetables - potatoes, beans, carrots, tomatoes - they are then surrounded by more extensive farmlands which have been damaged by flooding.

In one area, we were looking at what we thought was a river running through a field of maize but it was in fact the offshoot of a flooded river. Crops have just been wiped out.

We also saw a lot of areas that were completely underwater, knowing that the rice would not be able to recover.

This is the period of pollination and, hence, because the rice is underwater during this period, it won't germinate and hence won't produce for the harvest due in September-October.

ASH and ABHI WAZ Up!!!!

The Ash-Abhi wedding finally kicked off with the sangeet at Prateeksha on Wednesday night. And, if wedding guests are to be believed, the celebrations were in true Bollywood style!

There was dance, music and masti. Of course, no prizes for guessing who won the first prize for best dance at the sangeet. Ash-Abhi’s extremely romantic tango number ironically from the film ‘Kyun… Ho Gaya Na’ choreographed by Sandip Soparrkar was a major hit. Both Abhi and Ash were colour co-ordinated in clothes designed by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.

Jaya and Amitabh bagged the second prize for their dance number on the popular ‘Kajra Re’. “I have never seen Amitabh Bachchan so comfortable and happy. Everyone present there were close friends and I guess it made a huge difference,” says our source.

The mehendi yesterday was obviously no less entertaining. Forty kilos of henna was imported from Rajasthan for the ceremony. Abhishek and family apparently went to Ash’s house at La Mer in Bandra in the evening after which the wedding party moved on to Prateeksha for yet another set of song and dance session. The soon-to-be wed couple wore off-white chikan creations by Abu-Sandeep.

HAIR CARE

Beat the egg yolk until it’s frothy. Add 1 tsp of baby oil and then beat ag ain. Add the mixture to the water and massage into the scalp and throughout your hair after shampooing. Rinse well. You can also use a tsp of olive oil instead of baby oil.

Mash an avocado well until it is really creamy. Apply it on damp hair an d cover it with plastic cap 30 minutes. Rinse well
Place olive oil and boiling water into large glass bottle or jar with a lid. After the mixture cools, massage it on your scalp and cover your head with a shower cap, then wrap your head in a hot towel that has been soaked in hot water then wrung out. After half an hour shampoo your hair as usual.

SKIN CARE

Cleansing

C leansing is the first essential step in your daily skin care routine.
Cleansing the face 2-3 times a day; is adequate for normal skin. If your skin is oily a more frequent cleansing i.e. 4-5 times a day is necessary. If your skin is dry it is best to avoid frequent washing and you may have to use a suitable oil-based cosmetic cleanser instead of soap, which has a dry effect.

There are several alternatives to soap and water cleansing.

Cleansers can be in the form of creams, milks, lotions, gels and liquids. All are, a mixture of oil, wax and water which have been formulated to suit different skin types. Cotton -pad dipped in fresh milk available at home, is an equally effective cleanser.

The right way to apply cleansers an d creams on your face is in an upward and outward movement. The skin should not be stretched, dragged or pulled. Leave the cleanser on fo r a minute or two so as to loosen the dirt and make up. Remove it either using a cotton wool or with a tissue paper, again using an upward and out ward movement. Finally rinse with water.

Masks

Basically all face masks have some sort of a cleansing action. Various ingredients are used in the masks, depending on the skin type. Clay, form an important constituent of many face masks. They help to remove dirt, sebum, and dead skin so that the skin looks clean, soft and youthful.
Fullers earth is a special type of clay often used in face packs. It contains aluminium silicate. As it dries on the skin, it absorbs the superficial dead cells and blots up any excessive oil on the skin. It is therefore excellent for an oily skin but should not be used on dry skin. Kaolin is also fine clay which has been used for tummy upsets because it absorbs toxins from the system. It removes grime, oils and dead cells. Kaolin is also best for oily skin and best avoided for dry skin.
Another ingredient of some of the masks is the peeling or the exfoliating agent-these remove the top layer of dead cells from the skin, leaving behind fresh youthful skin. Oatmeal and bran are the commonly used peelers. Oatmeal is obtained from oats which is rich in Vitamin B and Vitamin E
Also added to many masks are natural ingredients-cucumbers, curds, lemon juice and Brewer's Yeast. It restores the acid / alkali balance of the skin.

Freshening
The skin care products include cosmetics like skin fresheners, toners and astringents which basically contains alcohol and water. These products are used after cleansing the skin to freshen and tone up the skin; they also restore the acid/ alkali balance of the skin. Having cleansed, wipe away any last traces of dirt or oil with a skin freshener or toner (cleansing milk) which suits your skin type. Non alcoholic fresheners are for dry and sensitive skin. Those with alcohol (astringent) are for oily skin. People with combination skin should use toner and astringent.

Mosturising

Regular use of a suitable moisturiser benefits your skin. The moisturiser not only replaces the water lost from the skin but also prevents its loss to the surroundings. It protects the skin against the drying influences of the environment such as the effects of the sun, cold and heat. Tinted moisturisers are very helpful under foundation. It always keeps the make up moist.
A moisturiser is particularly helpful for dry skins. Oil free moisturisers can be used for oily skins.
There are two types of moisturisers: Oil - in water emulsions and water -in -oil emulsions. The moisturiser you select should suit your skin type. For normal skins, a water based moisturiser containing a little oil is suitable. Sensitive skins and dry skins need moisturisers having high oil content.
Protecting
The sun, is the environmental factor that is most harmful to the health and appearance of the skin. Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight can cause permanent damage to the skin. It can cause the skin to sag, lose elasticity and form wrinkles. Severe sunburn can even cause skin cancer.
Sunscreen and foundation protects the skin against the damaging ultraviolet rays. It also shields your face from direct contact with dirt or pollutants in the air and helps the skin against loosing its necessary moisture.
Sunscreen's come in lotions and creams . A sunscreen with the sun protection factor (SPF) of number 15 can block most of the sun's ultraviolet radiations before it can damage the skin. The SPF number indicates the length of time; the product will protect the skin. Sunscreens should be applied at least 10 minutes before you go out in the sun

GET RED OF BLACKHEADS

Use an oatmeal or almond face mask to cleanse your face. Mix either oatmeal or almond powder with enough rose water to make a soft paste that spreads easily on the skin. Rub it on your skin with your fingertips. Leave it for about 15 minutes and then rinse off with cold water.
Rub biter guard gently on your face to peel them off for ever. Do it once a day for nearly 3-5 days.
For 1/4 cup boiling water add 1 tsp of Epsom salt and three drops of iodine. Let the mixture cool until it's comfortable to the touch. Saturate a cotton ball with this mixture and dab on blackheads. This method will help them to loosen, so that they can be easily squeezed with a gauze pad.
Warm a little honey and apply on the affected areas. Wash off after 10-15 minutes
Apply undiluted lemon juice, two to three times a day.
Wash the skin gentle, natural exfoliating product and pat the skin dry. Later steam your face with boiling water, and a few drops of tea tree oil to open the pores and soften the skin. Apply a clay mask, such as betonies clay or seaweed clay mask to absorb the oil in blocked pore. Leave it for more than 10 min and rinse of with warm water.
Remember, the best way to remove blackheads is to be gentle and soft. An overly stress on the face will only force the blockage deeper into the skin, causing many skin infection.

Running Stitch: Take two strands of thread, tie a knot at one end and start stitching. Take the needle up from below the fabric, leave some space, take it down and up again repeatedly till the outline is fully done. Start stitching inside the design in the same way until the whole design is filled.

Chicken Work is almost similar to Shadow work. Like Shadow work, Closed Herring Bone stitches are done on the wrong side of the fabric but the stitches are not done as perfectly as in Shadow work. SHADOW WORK

Shadow work as the name implies, is the shaded part of a design worked on the wrong side of a fabric. Shadow work is usually done on fine transparent fabric like Organdy, Organza etc. and the Stitch used for shadow work is Closed Herring Bone Stitch, also known as Double Back Stitch. The colour of the thread appears delicately through the fabric giving the design a shadowy appearance.

Round Glass Beads are usually used for flower making. Glass Beads are available in a variety of colours and different textures. Clear crystal beads lined with dye, transparent beads with the light shining through giving a jewel like appearance

and Chalk or solid beads which are not at all transparent. Large beads are used on stem wires for finishing the stem of a flower or the centre veins of leaves.

Basics of Petals
Petals can be of different shapes like round, pointed, loop, wrap shape etc. Some designs have the petal pointed at one end and some at both end.. You can make all the petals of the flower continuously with one wire or make each petal with different wires and join them to make a flower.

Basic count
A basic wire to string the basic count of beads, around which the design is formed is needed for both round and pointed petal. Take a silver or gold wire cut out a piece of wire to string the basic number of beads needed for the particular design. The lower end of the basic wire is the 'bottom' of the petal and upper part is the 'top' of the petal. The shape of the top and bottom of the petal depends upon the design.

Stem
After making the flowers. Make a loop with the feed wire left. Decide the length of the stem. Say if it’s about 12", cut a 24" length piece from the wire and fold it in exactly half, so that the stem will look thick. Or use a thick wire for the stem. At the end of the stalk make a small bend and hook it on the loop below the flower. Then wind the green tape around the stem completely. Binding Flowers or leaves to the stem.
Hold a binding wire very securely against the stem. Bring the bottom of the petal or leaf close to the stem wire with its hanging stems downward. Wind the wire tightly around the stem. Each leaf or petal is attached one at a time with the same piece of winding wire.
When all petals have been joined to the stem go around the stem with the binding wire another two turns and cut away.

This dried flower design is so simple that even kids can do it easily. For makingthis design takes a piece of thermocol or any plastic tray. Here we have used a thermocol tray we get with fruits packed from shops.
The tray is kept upside down. Draw border lines with marker (here an orange and green line)and put dots with sketch pen or sparkles.

TISSUE FLOWER DECOR

REQUIREMENTS

Face Tissue - different colors

METHOD:
At first, take the tissue paper and cut it equally into

four strips. Now attach three of these strips to make a long strip. Fold this long strip equally making it to about one fourth of its full length. Using a scissor, cut its edges and later unfold the strip of tissue. Take the aluminum wire and fold its edge. Dip its edge in glue. Slowly wind the tissue paper around the wire. As you wind, crush the paper (at the folding edge) for a filling look, at small intervals until you wind the whole strip. Now tighten the same aluminum wire or thread around the flower for support and to prevent from falling off. Wind the green tape around the wire to make the stem. Your flower is ready. Arrange with fresh ferns for an attractive look.
Another Method with Tissue or organdy cloth material:
Tissue paper or organdy cloth Green Thread Green Tape Aluminum Wire.

METHOD:
Cut out 7 to 8 round pieces (5cm diameter) from the organdy cloth. Fold the circles twice to make a cone shape and cut the round edges finely. Open out the circles. Cut out two long strands of thin wire. Fold one circle pieces and wind a long strand of wire at the end. Take one more circle and do the same. Keep both together and plait the two wires together. Wind the green tape around the wires (stem). Make a pin hole at the centre of the rest of the circles and insert this one by one through the wire from below. Tie it with a green thread to keep it in place.

POPPY FLOWERS

REQUIREMENTS

Crepe Paper (red and Golden yellow)

METHOD:
Cut red crepe paper for petals as shown in figure (4 or 5 pieces for each flower).
Make the centre of the flower by wrapping a ball of cotton with black cloth and tying it with a thread. Attach a stem wire by twisting the wire at the bottom of the center. Take a strip of golden yellow crepe paper and cut its edges 1/4 " to the centre of the strip. Wind the strip around the flower centre and tie it with a thread as shown in the picture gallery. After creping (crumbling) the petals by Handkerchief method, fix petals to the centre using thread. Wrap the stem with green tape. Now your flower is ready, arrange with fresh or artificial leaves.

Handkerchief method
Cut the petal and fold in half lengthwise. Place it inside a handkerchief or other light material. Using the palm of one hand to hold the base of the petals, the cloth is pulled firmly away from the centre crease.

GLASS PAINTING

METHOD

First a traced design is placed on the table and the plain glass is placed above the design, so that the design is clearly seen through the glass. Now mix the two coloured pastes of the m seal in equal proportion to get a wax finish. With the help of talcum powder roll the dough (M seal Mixture) into thin and even strings. This string is stuck with glue over the glass on the outline of the trace which is kept under the glass and allowed to dry.

When it dries colour it with black glass paint.

Before you start painting the colour, test your shades on the corner of the glass and wipe it off with the thinner. The colour choice should be perfect because the stained glass paint gets dried up fast and the correction cannot be done easily. While painting, the colour blending should be done quickly and carefully. When the whole painting and the m seal border gets dried, remove the trace. Now place a crushed aluminum foil behind the picture and get it framed.

Painting is the art in which colors and lines make the visual impression. Besides painting with brushes, knives, spatula, nibs and even twigs are used for painting. Here, we are going to do a nib painting

METHOD
Using glue stick the felt on the hard board. Trace down the design on the felt. Now you are ready to paint the design. Two things should be always taken care while doing nib painting. One, you should always start painting from top so as to move your hand freely towards down part. Secondly, you should move your hand evenly while doing your painting. This gives the painting a real look.

Decide on the shade scheme of your design. Since the petals are not of the same shade, white and pink paint should be used in good combination to get the double shade. Put the paint straight onto the felt. Press on it or score on the paint using the nib. Wherever a round design is required use the nib with round tip and wherever the small sharp lines are drawn short pointed tip nip is used. Generally long tip nib is used to do the lines. You can also take the paint on the nib and press it against the surface to create the design. You may take 2-3 days to finish off with a design. But do it patiently. You will enjoy this. The design will dry off very slowly, say by 10- days or more. The consistency of the paint is very thick. After the design is fully dried, get it framed.

A very easy method that anyone can try out, to make beautiful designs on your Saree, shawl or table cloth etc. The perfection and beauty of the print depends on the color combinations you choose. If the fabric is dark then light color paints will look better and vice versa. It can be done even on expensive silk fabrics

METHOD:

Take leaves of different shapes, especially thick veined leaves with curved edges will look nice.
Iron the cloth in order to make it wrinkle free. Decide on the design and paints. Paint the back or wrong side of the leaf completely with the chosen colors. Stick the leaf on the cloth and press well. Before making the print on the good material it is better have a trial on the rough cloth. Leaves can be stuck in a straight line or randomly according to your aesthetic taste. Let it dry for 24 hrs or dry it in the sun for an hour. For the painting to last longer, iron the back side of the design. Ironing should be done only after drying.
Tips
To make the work look extra rich, you can stitch thin laces in between the prints as shown in top figure. Material used in this is white silk, golden thin lace and green, red and blue paints.
